Android App Notifications Not Working: A Practical Checklist

When Android app notifications are not working, first decide whether the notification never arrived, arrived silently or was hidden from the place you expected to see it. Those are different problems.
Start with one app and one reproducible test. Changing every battery, network and notification setting at once can make alerts return without showing which setting mattered.
Describe the missing alert
Note the app, type of alert, expected time and where you expected it: sound, banner, status bar or lock screen. Check whether the relevant message or event appears when you open the app.
For example, an event visible inside the app with no sound points toward a different investigation from an event missing from the account entirely. Do not reinstall until you understand that distinction.
Check the app’s notification controls
Open Android settings, find Notifications or the app’s information screen and inspect its notification setting. On supported versions, an application may need notification permission.
Some apps also expose separate notification categories or channels. The main switch can be on while a particular type of alert is off or silent. Check the category associated with the missing event.
Review in-app preferences
Open the application’s own notification settings. A service may let you choose which events generate alerts, mute particular conversations or pause notifications.
Use a nonessential test where practical. After changing one relevant setting, repeat the same test and record the result. Do not send repeated test messages to other people without their agreement.
Check quiet modes and visibility
| Observation | Setting to inspect |
|---|---|
| Alert appears with no sound | Silent category, volume and quiet mode |
| Alert appears after unlocking | Lock-screen display and content settings |
| One conversation is quiet | Conversation-specific or in-app mute |
| No categories alert | App-level permission and notification switch |
| Alert arrives only after opening the app | Background activity, connection and app support |
Menu labels vary by Android release and manufacturer. Follow the manufacturer’s help if your device uses a different name for a quiet or focus mode.
Separate privacy choices from delivery
Hiding sensitive notification contents on the lock screen is a privacy setting. It does not necessarily mean the app failed to deliver an event.
Decide whether you want the notification’s existence shown without its private text. Do not expose full message contents merely to troubleshoot a missing banner. Choose the display arrangement that fits your privacy needs.
Investigate delayed background delivery
If the alert appears only after opening the app, check the connection and whether data or battery restrictions affect that app. Background behaviour also depends on the app’s implementation and the device.
Do not give every app unrestricted background access as a blanket solution. For a critical messaging or reminder app, consult the developer and manufacturer for the smallest relevant change. See battery-use diagnosis and mobile-data controls.
Confirm the account and service
An app signed into the wrong account, a muted subscription or a service outage can affect expected alerts. Check the supported account view and official status information if available.
Reinstalling the client cannot create an event the service did not send. Similarly, a notification setting cannot fix an account eligibility or sync problem by itself.
Build a useful support report
Record the app release, device model, Android version, alert category and whether the event appears in-app. Include the relevant settings you checked and whether the problem happens on both supported network connections.
Remove personal message text from screenshots. The developer usually needs the timing and behaviour before it needs private conversation content.
Should I clear app data to restore alerts?
Not as an early step. It can remove local information and reset settings. Review the consequences first.
Is one successful test enough?
It confirms that test worked under those conditions. Check the alert type you depend on and normal locked-screen conditions too.
Match the setting to the symptom
For Android app notifications not working, distinguish delivery, sound and visibility before changing restrictions. That gives you a targeted fix while preserving privacy and battery control.
