How to install an APK on Android
An APK is an Android installation file. Follow these steps when a developer provides a package outside Google Play. Menu names vary by phone brand and Android version.
Install in six clear steps
Check your device
Compare the app’s Android requirements with your phone. Check free storage and choose the correct phone, tablet or TV build.
Download the APK
Prefer the developer’s own download page. Start one download and wait until your browser shows it has finished.
Open the completed file
Find the package in your browser’s Downloads list or your file manager. A standard APK usually ends in .apk.
Review installation access
If Android asks, review permission for the browser or file manager opening the file. Allow that source only when you trust it.
Read the prompts
Check the app name and installation message. After installation, grant only permissions that make sense for the app’s purpose.
Close installation access
Turn off that browser or file manager’s installation permission when you no longer need it. Keep a note of the app’s original source for updates.
Something went wrong?
The file will not open
Check that the download finished. Remove an incomplete copy and download again from the intended source. Make sure the file is actually an APK.
“App not installed” or incompatible
Check storage, the required Android version and the device build. A phone, TV or architecture-specific package may have different requirements.
An update conflicts with an installed app
Check the current app’s version and original source. Different package signing can prevent an update. Do not uninstall without considering the local data you could lose.
A work or school device blocks it
Managed devices can restrict installation. Contact the administrator and follow the device policy.
Quick questions
Can I install an APK on an iPhone?
No. APK files are for Android and cannot be installed directly on iOS.
What about APKM, XAPK, split APKs or AAB?
These are different package formats or collections. They are not the same as one standalone APK. Follow the developer’s supported process; renaming the extension will not convert the file.
Does installation mean an app is safe?
No. Android accepting a package is not a safety guarantee. Review the source, permissions and security messages.
How do I update later?
Return to the original trusted source, check release notes and compare versions. Review any changes to permissions before using the update.
